Dove Hunting in North Texas: What to Expect This Season

There’s something special about opening day of dove season in Texas. The sunrise, the dogs anxious in the field, the hum of wings overhead—it’s a tradition that brings hunters together year after year. And for 2025, the outlook for dove hunting in North Texas is looking strong.

The Dove Population This Year

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the statewide mourning dove population is estimated at 35.9 million—that’s up 5% from last year and nearly 30% above the long-term average. White-winged doves saw a slight dip from last year’s record high, but at 11.7 million birds statewide, they’re still well above average and holding steady.

Here in North Texas, conditions couldn’t be better. Spring nesting surveys show excellent reproduction, and timely summer rains have produced plenty of natural forage like sunflowers, croton, and annual grasses. In short, the table is set for a very good season.

Why North Texas Should Have a Great Season

The Rolling Plains and areas around the Metroplex are key staging grounds for migrating doves, and this year’s weather has created both food and water sources that draw birds in. Early September hunts should see solid numbers around grain fields, while later in the season, waterholes and tanks will become hot spots as natural food dries up.

For hunters in Denton, Wise, Cooke, and surrounding counties, expect to see plenty of action—especially in the mornings and late afternoons when birds are flying to feed and water.

Hunting Pointers for a Successful Season

If you’re heading out this fall, here are a few tips to help make the most of your hunts:

  • Scout your fields – Doves are creatures of habit. Watch where they feed and water, and set up along those flight lines.

  • Be flexible with timing – Early morning flights are strong, but as the season wears on, mid-day hunts near water can produce big results.

  • Know the rules – The North Zone season runs Sept. 1–Nov. 9, then Dec. 19–Jan. 7. The daily bag limit is 15 birds, with licensing and endorsements required.

  • Beat the heat – September hunts are hot. Stay hydrated, and keep an eye on your dogs.

Dove Hunting and Land Ownership

For landowners in North Texas, dove hunting adds real value to your property. A strong dove season not only provides great recreation but also highlights the investment potential of farmland and ranch properties with good habitat. Whether it’s sunflower fields, open pasture, or a well-placed stock tank, quality hunting ground can be a selling point in today’s land market.

With populations thriving and habitat in excellent shape, 2025 is shaping up to be one of the best dove hunting seasons North Texas has seen in years. Hunters can expect fast shooting, plenty of opportunity, and the kind of memories that only a Texas dove season can deliver.
